Object storage is making a mark in the enterprise: Vivek Tyagi, SanDisk

Vivek Tyagi, Director-Business Development, Commercial Sales and Support, SanDisk, Western Digital, sheds light on the new storage trends in the market and why object storage is becoming popular.

Today, the technological revolution is accelerating at a breakneck speed. At present, the storage industry in India is undergoing a sea change with traditional storage being replaced with advanced and innovative solutions.

Traditionally, enterprise storage has been shrinking and new forms of storage are marking a mark. “All web tech companies have been building storage in different ways. They use a variety of open source file system to build storage. It is scalable and available at a low cost,” said Vivek Tyagi, Director- Business Development, Commercial Sales and Support, SanDisk, Western Digital at the ChannelWorld Premier 100 2017 event hosted in Mumbai.

With object storage one can move to petabyte scale of data with backup and archival. Moreover, object storage lowers costs and is highly durable.

Tyagi said that the new category coming to our system is object storage. "We have seen the emergence of object storage, especially when data is unstructured."

Why are companies choosing object storage? “One can move to petabyte scale of data with backup and archival,” said Tyagi. Moreover, object storage lowers costs and is highly durable.

It can also be used for companies doing research in genetics. The storage solution is S3 compatible. It is easy to move data from cloud to your own premises.

The media and entertainment industry is the popular use case of object storage. Tyagi believes that object storage is a good replacement for tape drives. Today, companies have a huge repository of data on tapes, but they are not able to monetize it. On object storage, it can be made available to customers online, who can download or stream the content. Everything can be monetized by the companies who own the content.

All said and done, “We are happy to work with partners across India on non-traditional new generation storage like object storage to monetize us and customers,” concluded Vivek.
