AT&T has unveiled plans to acquire AlienVault in a bid to expand the tech giant’s enterprise-grade security portfolio into small and medium-sized businesses.
The agreement sees the US-based multi-national take control of the San Mateo, California-based specialist vendor for an undisclosed amount, with the transaction expected to close by the third quarter of 2018.
Specifically, the acquisition will enable AT&T to expand security solutions and offerings to “millions of” SMBs, leveraging capabilities which include threat intelligence, detection and prevention.
“Regardless of size or industry, businesses today need cyber threat detection and response technologies and services,” said Thaddeus Arroyo, CEO, AT&T Business. “The current threat landscape has shifted this from a luxury for some, to a requirement for all.
“AlienVault’s expertise in threat intelligence will improve our ability to help organisations detect and respond to cybersecurity attacks.
“Together, with our enterprise-grade detection, response and remediation capabilities, we’re providing scalable, intelligent, affordable security for business customers of all sizes.”
After the acquisition closes, Arroyo said AT&T business customers will be able to access a unified security management platform with expertise across threat detection and response.
Furthermore, AT&T has committed to continuing to invest in AlienVault’s unified security management platform and open threat exchange, billed as the world’s “first and largest” open threat intelligence community.

“This deal accelerates our ability to deliver on the AlienVault mission, which is to democratise threat detection and response to companies of all sizes.”
Upon closing of the deal, AlienVault will form a key part of AT&T’s edge-to-edge intelligenceSM capabilities, spanning from the core of a company’s network to all endpoints.
Founded in 2007, AlienVault operates as a specialist developer of commercial and open source solutions to manage cyber attacks.
From a channel perspective, key partners include resellers, managed service providers and alliance vendors, which include Cisco, Fortinet and Carbon Black, in addition to Symantec and Palo Alto Networks.
