• VMware disses bare-metal desktop hypervisors

    VMware is claiming it doesn't need to deliver on its promise of a bare-metal desktop hypervisor, but says that if it does choose to release a so-called Type 1 client hypervisor it would be better than Citrix's. "Let's set the record straight there," says Vittorio Viarengo, vice president of desktop marketing for VMware. "If there's one company that can nail a client hypervisor, it's VMware."

  • Gartner projecting weaker Second Half for PC Shipments

    The research company downgraded its forecast for PC shipments during the second half, saying it will grow by 15.3 percent, which is around 2 percent lower than the previous forecast.Consumer and business demand for PCs will remain strong and continue to grow, but at slower rates relative to earlier expectations, said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.

VMware, which announced the pending acquisitions at its VMworld conference taking place this week in San Francisco, did not disclose financial details of the transactions. The company plans to complete the acquisitions by the end of September.

    Cisco is reportedly looking to buy Skype before the Internet phone provider goes public while it would be a multibillion purchase as Skype is looking to raise $5 billion in its initial offer. A blog states Google also may be interested in Skype but could be precluded from making an offer for the company due to antitrust concerns.

    The acquisition is part of a bigger push to address vendor lock-in and offer more self-service tools. Citrix will also add technology from VMLogix to its Citrix OpenCloud platform so that its public-cloud-provider customers can offer lifecycle management capabilities like quality assurance and business continuity.
