Wanova's Desktop Virtualization Software Now Available

Desktop virtualization start-up Wanova is making its technology to manage remote and mobile PCs generally available Tuesday.

Wanova, one of Network World's "10 start-ups to watch in 2010," came out of stealth mode last August and is just now marketing its Mirage Suite, which lets IT manage desktops centrally while giving users the ability to customize their desktop. Wanova calls its technology "Distributed Desktop Virtualization" because of the focus on enterprises with remote and mobile workforces.

Wanova stores the primary copy of desktop images in the data center, allowing users to access their desktops from multiple devices. Wanova also provides a client that installs into the operating system of a user's computer. It does not require a hypervisor but can work with operating systems running on a hypervisor.

"Organizations can manage a single base image comprised of the operating system and core applications, yet the end users can install applications, save user settings, and maintain the state of their own PC even as the organization is enforcing that base image and maintaining compliance," says Michele Borovac, Vice President - Marketing.

Storing the desktop image in the data center makes it easier to protect data, and also to get users up and running again if their computer is lost or stolen, she notes.

Pricing for Mirage starts at $210 per user.
