Application Development Software Sales on the Up in 2009

By ARN Tue, Jun 16, 2009

Application development (AD) software sales growth dropped seven per cent during 2007 to 2008, but analysts expect the market to accelerate this year. In that period the worldwide market grew from $US7 billion to $US7.3 billion.

The Asia-Pacific market recorded the fastest growth rate of 12.1 per cent to hit $US608.1 million.
Figures released by analyst firm, Gartner, show that the three biggest players in the market – IBM, Microsoft and HP – also experienced above average growth. HP’s sales grew 11.1 per cent to knock CA out of third place.

Laurie Wurster, Research director at Gartner, said that the global economic crisis was proving to be a challenge but expectations were high for a recovery this year. “We expect the growth rate to increase from the third quarter of 2009. “Alternate software models will pick up and vendors will optimise on direct versus channel sales,” he said.

“The bulk of business for advanced developments and advanced usage of AD tools will come from North America and some mature economies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa,” suggested Wurster.
